Nappy and Toilet Training Policy

Only registered childminders and approved assistants will be allowed to change a child’s nappy or provide intimate care.

Nappies

  • We are happy to accept babies and children in nappies.
  • We need parents to provide the following:
    • Nappies
    • Baby Wipes
    • Any cream that you use on your child
  • We will provide a changing mat, which will be wiped over with disinfectant after each use and nappy sacks for the disposal or used nappies.
  • We will always use plastic gloves when changing nappies to reduce risk so please tell us if your child is allergic to these.
  • The childcarer and the child will use anti-bacterial hand gel to clean their hands after a nappy change.
  • We will change your child regularly and immediately if they have soiled a nappy.
  • We believe that changing a nappy should provide lots of opportunity to communicate with your child and as their understanding grows provides time to discuss basic hygiene issues preparing them for toilet training.

Toilet training

  • Wherever possible we will work with parents/carers who are starting to toilet train a child in our care.
  • We will discuss your plans and wishes with regard to toilet training your child as it is important to work together and pick the right time to start.
  • We may use trainer pants for any child toilet training for outings or if they are having an excessive number of accidents.  We need to do this to ensure a hygienic setting for the other children.
  • We will offer the child encouragement and understanding during toilet training time.
  • Unless the parent/carer wishes otherwise, we will encourage the children to use a special child toilet seat and a step stool within our setting.
  • We will clean the toilet with antibacterial spray regularly.
  • We will ask parents/carers to ensure their child is dressed in appropriate clothes that can be removed quickly.
  • We will ask for additional sets of clothes to be made available in case of multiple accidents.
  • If we have to lend clothes owned by the setting following an accident and they are not returned within 7 days we may levy a charge to cover the cost of the clothes as well as an admin fee.
  • If a child is obviously not ready once we start the training we can stop and start again when they are.
  • We will provide daily feedback on how the training is progressing.

For children who use the toilet

  • Children will be encouraged to use the toilet independently; however, we will help the child if we feel it is necessary.
  • Children will be encouraged to keep good hygiene by washing hands after using the toilet with soap and water.
  • Each child will use automatic hand driers to dry their hands with.
  • Toilets will be cleaned regularly.
  • Children should bring at least one change of clothes in case of accidents.
  • If we have to lend clothes owned by the setting following an accident and they are not returned within 7 days we may levy a charge to cover the cost of the clothes as well as an admin fee.
