Accidents/Incidents/Emergencies Policy

Policy Statement:

The safety of the children in our care is very important to us and we will make every effort we can to protect your child from harm.

The childminding premises meets the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage in England and is checked and inspected by Ofsted and / or Little Footsteps Childcare Ltd (Childminder Agency CA000034).

We practice fire evacuation procedures regularly and record dates and times. We review and update the fire evacuation procedures regularly.  There is a commercial grade fire alarm system with call points, smoke detectors, heat detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.  This alarm system is tested weekly and a log kept of the results. There are fire extinguishers in all childminding areas and a fire blanket in the kitchen.

No matter how careful childcarers are regrettably sometimes accidents do happen and we have the following procedures on how we will react in the event of an accident occurring.

Procedures

All childminders are legally required to have a valid Paediatric first aid certificate (which is renewed every three years) before registration as a childminder and as such we are able to ensure that a trained first aider is always available to administer basic first-aid treatment.

We have a clearly labelled first-aid kit which is easily accessible at all times. It is stored on the stairs to the main playroom and there is also another labelled first-aid kit in the boots of the vehicles used for minded children.

In each first-aid kit there is a list of parent/carer contact numbers. We have written consent from parents to enable us to obtain emergency treatment for their child if this is required.
The first-aid kit is regularly checked to make sure it is up to date.

At the beginning of the childminding relationship

  • Agree with the parents as to what to do when a child needs emergency medical treatment and record this in the child record documents.
  • Gain emergency contact details for the parents/carers and any other suitable adults and record the details in the child record documents.

Minimising the likelihood of an accident in the home

  • Risk assessments will be carried out and reviewed at least annually or in the event of an incident.
  • The risk assessments will identify aspects of the environment which need to be checked on a regular basis.
  • Reasonable steps will be taken to minimise identified risks.

Accidents/Incidents/Emergencies Policy

In the event of an incident
  • We will follow any set procedures given to us by the parent if it was known that the incident could take place (for example a child having a seizure or going into anaphylactic shock due to an allergy).

    • If still not resolved and the incident is minor we will call the parents or another emergency contact for further guidance.
    • If we are unable to contact the parents or any other emergency contact we will contact NHS 111 and follow their advice.
    • If suitable we will use items from the first aid box and our first aid training to treat the injury.
  • If the incident is serious we will call 999 (112 on a mobile) for an ambulance.
  • If we are caring for other children at the same time we will look to provide continued approved care for them, leaving them with other staff or contact their parents for early collection. In a genuine emergency we may have to leave them with an unregistered carer to ensure the children are safe.
  • We will record all the information on the incident in the Accident/Incident record form.

In the event of a minor accident

  • We will attempt to make the environment safe for all the children we are caring for.
  • We will use items from the first aid box and our knowledge of first aid to make the child better, limit the injury or limit the potential for the injury to increase.
  • We will call the parent/carer if we feel they need to know prior to collection.
  • At collection we will tell the parent the details of the accident.
  • We will fill in the Accident/Incident record form.

In the event of a major accident

  • We will attempt to make the environment safe for all the children we are caring for.
  • We will follow the agreement made with the parents on what to do if the child requires emergency medical treatment, as detailed in the child’s record.
  • If practical we will call the parents or another emergency contact for further guidance.
  • If we are not confident that the child will be okay we will call an ambulance.
  • If we have to take or accompany your child to hospital we will always contact a parent to ask them to meet us at the hospital.
  • If we are caring for other children at the same time we will look to provide continued approved care for them e.g. another member of staff or contact their parents for early collection. In a genuine emergency we may have to leave them with an unregistered carer but this would be a last resort and only until a registered carer arrived on site.
  • We must notify Ofsted and / or Little Footsteps Childcare Ltd (Childminder Agency CA000034) of any serious accident, illness or injury to, or death of, any child whilst in our care, and of the action taken in respect of it. Notification must be made as soon as is reasonably practicable, but in any event within 14 days of the incident occurring.
  • We must notify local child protection agencies of any serious accident or injury to, or the death of, any child whilst in our care and act on any advice given.

Accidents/Incidents/Emergencies Policy

  • We will notify our insurers.
  • We will record all the information on the accident in the Accident/Incident record form.

Emergency Backup Arrangements

  • Key childminder agency staff are also registered childminders to provide emergency back-up if a childminder is unable to work.
  • In the event of an accident the emergency back-up may require you to collect your child straight away and contact you to do this.
  • If one of our own children, dependents or we have an accident, we will contact our emergency back-up people and while waiting for them to arrive we will get the nearest responsible adult to assist me.
  • We will at all times try to keep the children in our care calm, safe and reassured.

Other Emergencies

  • In the event of other emergencies occurring (for example: a member of our families becoming ill at the premises, gas leak, severe weather or a terrorist attack) we will contact parents/carers as soon as is possible to arrange collection.
  • If an accident or emergency happens to a parent we should be informed as soon as possible. If parents cannot contact us please contact the childminder agency on 01444 848118. We will keep the children with us until the parents make contact.
